Early Xmas Present for Elst

December 16 - Xmas arrived early for Scotty Elst at the Perth Motorplex tonight, with a Feature Race win in Round 6 of the Rogue Race Products Season Championship for Wingless Sprints. The night got better and better for Elst as it wore on, a third place in the opening round of heats followed by a heat victory, and then an all the way win in the feature race. Daryl Clayden warmed up for tomorrow night's Queensland Title with 2nd, and acknowledged Elst's win with a tongue in cheek "that Scotty Elst is really starting to give me the......."......well I'll save your language filter the trouble, suffice to say Clayden has a long midnight flight east to ponder how to beat the Esco Electrical #95.

Heat 1 got the night away to a fairly straight forward start, but not before Benny Migro suffered the misfortune of a blown motor while running a new motor in during the Rookie Race. That left Migro sharing the driving duties in the Motorworld #22 of Marshall McDiarmid. Jono Coyle led Heat 1 away, and after making the most of his pole start, went on to a relatively comfortable win. Daryl Clayden did chase hard on the still greasy track, and caused some moments of consternation for Coyle after he under steered in Turn 4 late in the race and Clayden pulled alongside. Coyle recovered however and started the night with maximum points. Behind that pair Daniel Keen was making up ground quickly and finished close behind the lead pair in 3rd, comfortably over Daryl Spalding. Migro was next in ahead of David Dickman, with LaMacchia, Currell and Beard rounding out the finishers.

Marshall McDiarmid made a great start to the second event of the evening, charging from a mid pack start to lead the field by the end of the first lap. Ryan Condren worked his way into 2nd early and set off after McDiarmid, but a restart was soon required after Phil Taylor, driving the Adtech Computers #71 made hard contact with the wall on Pits Bend. At the resumption it was again McDiarmid ahead of Condren, while Merv Lowther set about making Scotty Elst's life difficult in 3rd. Lowther did eventually take the spot away from Elst in the Esco Electrical #95, but was later relegated by Chief Steward Jerome Sutton who adjudged the contact Lowther made on the way through unacceptable. McDiarmid ultimately took the heat, over Condren with Elst moved back to 3rd by the stewards. Glen Francis and Troy Tomlinson were the other finishers of an eventful heat.

McDiarmid had a great opportunity to consolidate a strong starting position for the feature, not to mention grabbing more all important season points, with a front row start in Heat 3. Alongside was Dickman, while Elst and Clayden sat ominously right behind. Elst and McDiarmid staside by side for much of the first lap, before McDiarmid took control of the race in lap two. Elst however wasn't to be denied, sweeping around the outside of McDiarmid as they passed the flag stand to complete lap two. Clayden soon compounded McDiarmid's misery, taking 2nd mid race, while the rest of the field were spread further back. Elst went on to complete the win, with Clayden 2nd ahead of McDiarmid, Dickman, Coyle, Ash Hounsfield, Francis and Currell.

Adrian LaMacchia lined up for Heat 4 alongside Merv Lowther, who was keen to grab back some points after his earlier relegation. At the start Lowther indeed grabbed the ascendency, while Condren also moved around LaMacchia and set about hauling in the charging Rogue Racing #46. The field spread into three 2 car match races as Condren closed on Lowther, Keen applied pressure to LaMacchia for 3rd and Migro pushed Spalding hard for 5th. As the 3 mini battles raged, Migro was the first to break, with Spalding eventually clearing out in 5th. Keen had a big look under LaMacchia in turn one on two consecutive laps but couldn't make the move stick on either occasion, while no one was catching Lowther. At the chequered flag it was Lowther taking the victory over Condren, with LaMacchia 3rd in the Northside Service Centre Maxim. Northern Territory #1 Keen held onto 4th, with Spalding, Migro, Tomlinson and Beard rounding out the field.

This left Elst to start the feature from pole, alongside McDiarmid, with Clayden and Condren behind. Coyle and Lowther completed the top six and the scene was set for an intriguing 15 lap final. Elst won the start, while McDiarmid was immediately under pressure from Clayden. Clayden grabbed 2nd on the 2nd lap, while Condren also moved under McDiarmid to move into a podium position. Behind the lead group Coyle, Spalding, LaMacchia and Keen were having a spirited battle over 6th place, with nothing separating the four cars lap after lap.

Lowther's night took another turn for the better with 7 laps remaining, passing McDiarmid for 4th, while Glen Francis pulled the Transit Clothing #50 to the infield in a cloud of steam. Hounsfield also pulled infield, while McDiarmid was now visibly slowing and lost further places in the closing laps.

Elst meanwhile came under pressure from Clayden late in the race, before taking a deserved win, while Condren completed a consistent night with a fine 3rd. Lowther was 4th, ahead of LaMacchia who won out in the multi car battle that had raged all race long. Coyle took 6th over Keen, with McDiarmid, Spalding, Beard, Tomlinson and Currell completing the list of finishers.
