Clayden Bags Boxing Night Win

December 26 - Boxing Night at Bunbury Speedway saw the Wingless Sprints start their post Christmas commitments with Round 3 of the Hills Panel & Paint 10 000 series, which doubled as Round 7 of the Rogue Race Products Season Pointscore. With only one round remaining in the 4 round Hills Panel Paint 10 000 and a stacked leaderboard, points were always going to be at a premium and a classy 24 car field fronted for action. The entire Top 10 after the first two rounds were in attendance, so there was no chance of anyone scoring a 'cheapie' on the day shops nationwide sprung into sale mode. One man who had a big smile on his face was the driver of the AJ Cochrane & Sons W7 Cool, Benny Migro, who announced his engagement 24 hours earlier.

By the end of the night, Daryl Clayden had a smile to match, having won a thrilling feature race, climbed to the top of the points standings in the Hills Panel & Paint 10 000 series and narrowed the gap to just 10 points in the Rogue Race Products Season Points. Kris Coyle did his best to upset Clayden's plans in the 20 lap feature, hounding the reigning National Champion through lapped traffic as the laps wound down. It made for great viewing as the two sliced through the traffic, Clayden at one stage exiting turn 4 and picking a gap between two lapped cars as Coyle lined up a move underneath. Ultimately Clayden was given somewhat of a reprieve as a solo spin by Daren Currell bought on the yellow lights and gave Clayden a clear track for a two lap dash to the finish.

Behind the lead pair there was no shortage of action, as 24 cars faced the starter and 21 were still running at the finish. Early on in the race it had been Coyle and Marshall McDiarmid side by side in a great battle for 2nd as Clayden cleared out at the start, while the returning Lee Redmond and Ash Hounsfield applied pressure of their own. Coyle won out in that battle and set out after Clayden, while Redmond and Hounsfield moved into 3rd and 4th and continued their own race within a race. Redmond was certainly due some luck after several promising feature positions early in the season were only rewarded with DNF's due to mechanical issue, and tonight the BJ Concrete Pumping W26 QT Chassis looked like it had never been away. Redmond was quick from the outset and all his experience showed in the tight confines of the very competitive feature race.

Tom Britton's wretched maiden outing in W.A continued in the feature as he pulled infield on the back straight in a cloud of smoke to be the race's first retirement, while Troy Tomlinson and Cameron McKenzie soon joined him mid race. With 21 cars still circulating however, there were no shortages of places to look for a great battle, with several mini packs throughout the field. Scotty Elst was a big mover as a DNF in his second heat saw him start back in 12th, but he worked his way through the field to 6th, with several late race moves salvaging a good feature race points return for the season points leader. Following Elst home was Northern Territory Champion Daniel Keen in the Keen Truck Driver Training W9 Eagle, while Kyle Beard, Jono Coyle and Glen Francis rounded out the Top 10. Francis looked quick as the state championship winning ex Lee Nash car debuted as the Transit Clothing backed W50 and he was right in the thick of tha action for the entire 20 laps.

Earlier in the night, Kris Coyle had racked up 25 points in the opening heat of the night towards both his series points tally, as well as a front row feature start. Coyle downed Phil Moylan who showed exceptional speed in the opener, as well as Clayden. Britton's night of misfortune started early as he retired infield, with the definite highlight of the opener being the race between Moylan and Clayden for 2nd.

McDiarmid then grabbed a very tight win in the second heat of the evening as he just pipped Daniel Coleman, with Elst following the pair home. Earlier in this heat, Coleman and Spalding had led away side by side, with contact between the pair in turn three. Spalding backed the Hills Panel & Paint W40 Avenger into the wall and was sent to the infield with a flat tyre. At the restart, Coleman led away, while McDiarmid, Migro and Beard battled for second. McDiarmid won out, while Elst was on a charge from his starting spot back in 10th, slipping by Beard for 4th. Elst eventually moved by Migro for 3rd, with Beard and Redmond following that pair home.

Clayden earned his first win of the night in the third heat, having secured the lead on Lap 2 from Ash Hounsfield. Tomlinson exited this one on the main straight as Clayden and Hounsfield cleared out from the rest of the field. Kris Coyle snatched 3rd from Francis on the final lap, with Marlin Walsh next.

Heat 4 was where the make up the feature was truly made up. Merv Lowther shared the front row with Scotty Elst, with Eslt in particular looking to consolidate after starting his night with a 3rd from deep in the pack at the start. Lee Redmond had an absolutely astonishing start, splitting the lead pair as they entered Turn 1 and charging into the lead. As the field moved into turn 4, Kyle Beard made contact with Elst and rode the wheel of the Esco Electrical W95 QT Chassis. McDiarmid tried to avoid the tangle and was in close proximity with Migro who eventually ended up making contact with the Turn 4 wall. When the dust settled, season series leader Elst was out of the race, and Migro was lining up at the back of the field.

Redmond again won the charge into the first corner oon the restart, with Lowther, Keen and Beard pressuring each other for 2nd. Keen won out in that battle and went on to record a 2nd place finish, while Beard took 3rd ahead of Lowther. Further back, McDiarmid, Gordon and Migro were swapping positions in the closing laps with Gordon winning out.

When the points were tallied, Clayden and Coyle were sharing the front row, while Redmond lined up alongside McDiarmid on the second row. Hounsfield and Beard completed the Top 6, and with 5 of those 6 still filling the top 6 spots at the completion of the race it showed what a premium was on those hard earned points earlier in the night.

Clayden now sits atop the Hills Panel & Paint 10 000 Series with one round to go, but won't have long to celebrate as the Wingless Sprints W.A head for the Perth Motorplex tomorrow night for Round 8 of the Rogue Race Products Series. With 10 points now all that separates he and Elst at the top of the leaderboard, and Keen, Hounsfield and Redmond also narrowing the gap on Elst at Bunbury, the night after Boxing Night should be an absolute ripper.

Wingless Sprints WA would like to thank all their sponsors for season 2011 / 12, with the support from season sponsor Rogue Race Products, and Gold Sponsors Steel Blue Workwear, Transit Clothing, Jim Kidd Sports and Keen Driver Training assisting in getting the club on the road to a successful season.
