December 28 - With the final chequered flag dropped on a wingless sprint in the west at the Perth Motorplex last night, and the Rogue Race Products Season Points chase well and truly taking shape, it is perhaps timely to look back at the season to date and some of the facts and figures of the 8 rounds to date, beyond the two man war Daryl Clayden and Scott Elst have waged over the past couple of months. While Clayden has opened up a solid lead, and he and Elst have skipped away from the rest of the pack, with 90 points available to any driver on any night the title is a LONG way from decided. So, what are the highlights and key stats of season 2011 / 12 so far? * 3 tracks have featured so far in the series (Perth Motorplex - 5 rounds, Bunbury Speedway - 2, Collie Speedway - 1). * Of the remaining 9 nights of racing, 6 are at Perth Motorplex, 1 more is at Bunbury Speedway and there is a round at Margaret River Speedway (when the Wingless Sprints last called on Margaret River, current 3rd placed Marshall McDiarmid was victorious). * 37 different drivers have so far started a race across the 8 rounds. * Feature race wins have been shared by 4 drivers with Daryl Clayden (4), Scott Elst (2), Marshall McDiarmid (1) and Kyle Beard (1) taking 40 point hauls away from A-Mains. * In the race for supremacy amongst chassis manufacturers, the count stands at Quick Time (6), J&J (1) and Gambler (1). * The 32 heat races have been shared amongst 11 different drivers. Scott Elst, Daryl Clayden, Daniel Keen and Marshall McDiarmid all have 5, while Lee Redmond (4), Ryan Condren and Kris Coyle (2), Kyle Beard, Danny Attwood, Jono Coyle and Merv Lowther (1) have also tasted success. On a heat race to feature race win, Clayden certainly knows where to be at the right time, while conversely Redmond must be driving over black cats every time he heads onto the track for a feature race, such has been his bad luck after strong heat performances. * 4 drivers have featured at every round so far. If the cars of Scott Elst, Daniel Keen, Ash Hounsfield and Ben Migro aren't familiar by now, they never will be. * Several drivers have only missed one round, but arguably the best 'miss' of the season so far was Our Car Autos proprietor Merv Lowther, who missed Round 5 to attend the Cold Chisel concert in Margaret River. Honourable mention here to Daryl Clayden who half heartedly offered yours truly a drive in his car for my ticket to the same concert. Berend Kaaks in the A1......there is something very wrong with that picture. * No driver has finished all 24 races available to them (2 heats and a feature at each of 8 rounds). Strangely enough however, all of Elst, Keen and Migro only have two 0's against their scoresheet. * As if to underline how close this class is in W.A right now, in 40 races this season, 2nd place has been shared amongst 16 different drivers, 8 of whom have not won an event. Dylan Buswell (4 times), Daryl Spalding and Ash Hounsfield (3), Glen Francis, Phil Moylan and Adrian LaMacchia (2), Ben Migro and Daniel Coleman (1) have all been 'that close' to tasting victory. * Showing a remarkable consistency in getting into the Top 2, Ryan Condren has finished in position 1 or 2 in 9 races out of the 15 available to him this season. If the W11 starts a race, look somewhere up the front if you want to see the red QT Chassis. * If Daniel Keen is in the top two during a race, don't bother with an each way bet. The W9 has finished in either first or second 6 times so far this season.......5 of them wins. Marshall McDiarmid (6 wins from 8 top two finishes) and Lee Redmond (4 from 5) also have a happy knack of converting track position into victories. There you have it, some of the key facts and figures of the story so far. Bring on January 2 at the Perth Motorplex and let's see what the second half of the season brings. Wingless Sprints WA would like to thank all their sponsors for season 2011 / 12, with the support from season sponsor Rogue Race Products, and Gold Sponsors Steel Blue Workwear, Transit Clothing, Jim Kidd Sports and Keen Driver Training assisting in getting the club on the road to a successful season. |
